SA's VERY OWN MASTER - MAUD SUMNER - FRAMED OIL ON BOARD - STILL LIFE ART - Signed
Born in 1902 and sadly passed in 1985, MAUD SUMNER is one of SA's most distinguished Painters and has achieved a high reputation outside her own country, especially in France and England. The fact that Maud Sumner has been an artist and a citizen of three countries largely accounts for the power, subtlety and originality of her work, both as a watercolor and as an oil painter.
MAUD FRANCES EYSTON SUMNER (1902–1985) was born in 1902 in Johannesburg South Africa. After completing her schooling at Roedean in Johannesburg she studied literature at OXFORD UNIVERSITY from 1922 to 1925. Sumner later studied painting at the Westminster School Of Art. Attracted to the French art scene, Sumner moved to Paris in 1926, where she studied for four years at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere. She was part of the art movement called the Ataliers d'Art Sacre, she loved the new style of painting taught by the masters George Desvallieres and his co-founder Maurice Denis, where everyday scenes were permeated with religious undertones. Although she had been separated from the South African art world she was invited by Walter Battiss to exhibit with the New Group in 1938. She was awarded the Medal of Honourin November 1971, accompanied by a sensationally successful "semi-retrospective" exhibition at the SA Association of Arts Gallery in Pretoria. Sumner died in early January 1985 at her home in Melrose, Johannesburg.
Her work ranges in value from R2750 for a sketch to R291 667 for a Painting
