This auction is for the slot car tool you have always promised yourself but have never actually gotten around to making...
Some background (preaching to the choir, so to speak - most of you know all this...) - slot cars run smoother and faster and handle better when their tyres are perfectly round and clean, much like a 1:1 car runs smoother when the wheels have been balanced. The tool for sale here allows you to easily sand the tyres of any slot car until they are properly round and / or clean. Simply plug the transformer in, fit the car's guide into the track slot, gently lower the rear wheels onto the sand paper for a few seconds (see picture below) and watch as the sand paper sands a thin layer of old, dirty, chipped or out-of-round rubber off the tyres to create round, clean tyres. The power to drive the motor is hard-wired into the track and the sand paper is glued to the track, so there is no need to fumble with hand throttles and loose pieces of sand paper to get smooth, clean tyres.
This tool is NOT high-tech or fancy, but it is also NOT complicated to operate, and can make a HUGE difference to your enjoyment of the racing, restoration and repair of slot cars!
Some advise though, for those who may not ever have trued tyres before:
(1) always sand the tyres in reverse - this tool allows you to change the direction of drive by either turning the plug under the track around or by switching the wires around on the transformer terminals, and is fitted with sand paper at both ends of the track, making it easy for both right-handed AND left-handed slot car enthusiasts to use.
(2) be careful when truing tyres on cars with strong magnets - they tend to 'pull' themselves onto the track, causing flat spots on the tyres.
(3) Sand the tyres until you either hear a marked improvement in the smoothness of the running gear (new tyres - they don't require that much sanding), or until you can see that the whole surface of each tyre is freshly scrubbed and clean (older tyres - you need to get down to 'fresh' rubber over the whole surface of the tyre in order to restore lost grip).
(4) Give the tyres a final clean using benzine and a sheet of paper towel - dip the end of the sheet of paper towel in benzine and then hold the soaked towel against each tyre as it spins on the tyre truer - you will be amazed at how much dirt comes off of tyres that look clean...be careful though when working with benzine - it might be the world's best cleaning solvent (it even gets sticky labels and decal glue off of slot car bodies etc.), but it is also highly flammable and for external use only - limit the exposure of benizne to the skin as far as possible (surgical gloves work well if you are going to clean lots of tyres etc.using benzine).
