Offered for sale is a rare and collectible " Willow Chair" made in the 1960's by the Cape Town based manufactory Frystark. The chair has a solid Natural Beech wood frame, truncated armrests and  a front stretcher; the rounded backrest and seat are made from compressed/laminated wood and veneer. Frystark furniture  design was was strongly influenced by Scandinavian modernist furniture design from the 50's and 60's. This chair was clearly modelled on the famous Domus stacking chair designed by Finnish designer Ilmari Tapiovaara. Domus chairs sell on Ebay for around 700 Euros

Cape Town antique dealer Justin Kerrod has a fascinating article on Frystark furniture design on his website www.kerrodantiques.co.za which includes numerous image files of midcentury furniture  pieces. In summary the history of Frystark furniture design : the company was founded in 1948 by brothers Derek and Owen Frye in Port Elizabeth; in 1959 they merged with GH Starck Ltd to form Frystark Furniture which expanded to provided nation-wide distribution and dealerships. In 1968 Frystark was bought out by Afcol and all mid-century inspired designs were phased out in favour of more conservative furniture design.

Delivery: Own collection or courier only from Emmerantia Jhb. Will assist to my best ability.
