Scarce Antique 1830's 'Fairy Villas' Vegetable Dish (Staple Repair)
This lovely rare Georgian Stone China vegetable dish, from the early 1800's, is decorated in the scarce powder blue and white 'Fairy Villas' pattern. What also makes this piece scares and unusual, is the Victorian repair with staples, which was an art on its own, and some early pieces have now become collectable. This large vegetable dish with scalloped edge and amazing detail, was made by 'John Meir & Son' of Greengate's Pottery, in Tunstall, Staffordshire, England. The dish has the early 'Fairy Villas Stone China' backstamp in blue and has been repaired with five brass staples. It measures 29,5cm x 23cm x 6,3cm and weighs 820g.
Note: Hundreds of years ago, before the availability of adhesives, repairs on pottery and china were done this way, using staples or rivets. Small holes were drilled into the piece, then staples were inserted, and the remaining gaps were filled with organic glue or clay. These repairs were done for various reasons, it could have either been a valuable piece or a treasured family heirloom, or even the possibility, the owner couldn't afford to replace the item with a new one.
