1966 Republic of Malawi (Declaration of the Republic of Malawi- 6 July 1966) proof nickel crown in original Royal Mint box, struck at the Royal Mint (London).Nice non- circulating commemorative issue with a very low mintage of only 20000 pieces. The obverse shows the portrait of Hastings Kamuzu Banda.

This was to commemorate the declaration of Malawi as a Republic within the British Commonwealth.Malawi was known as Nyasaland prior to independence. It had been part of the Federation of Rhodesia & Nyasaland, which was dissolved at the end of 1963.Nyasaland became independent on the 6th of July as the Dominion of Malawi, with the last Governor of Nyasaland,Sir Glyn Jones staying on as Governor-General of Malawi. The Malawian coins of 1964 depict Hastings K. Banda when he was Prime Minister.Banda became the first President of Malawi upon the declaration of the republic.Banda became very autocratic & eventually declared Malawi to be a one-party state & himself as 'President-for-Life'.Banda's time in office ended in 1994.He died in 1997 in South Africa.
