About the Book
Published in 1830, Scarlet and Black (Le Rouge et le Noir) remains one of the supreme achievements of European realism a novel of psychological depth and social observation that bridges Romantic passion with modern irony.

At its heart is Julien Sorel, the son of a provincial carpenter, whose restless ambition and intellect drive him to scale the rigid hierarchies of post-Napoleonic France. Torn between the red of the soldiers uniform and the black of the priests cassock, Juliens fate becomes a mirror of an age caught between faith and reason, passion and hypocrisy, pride and submission.

Stendhals prose lucid, ironic, and psychologically acute set the template for the realist novel later perfected by Flaubert and Zola. Yet beneath the social critique runs an enduring human question: how to reconcile authenticity with ambition in a world of masks and mirrors.

About the Author
Stendhal (Marie-Henri Beyle, 17831842) was a French novelist, essayist, and thinker whose exploration of love, power, and self-consciousness influenced generations of writers from Tolstoy to Proust. His major works, The Charterhouse of Parma and Scarlet and Black, fuse romantic idealism with ironic realism, anticipating the psychological modernism of the twentieth century.
