Kanna was historically used as an appetite suppressant, as well as for its ability to elevate mood, while decreasing stress and tension. Kanna has a long history of use, and traditionally prepared dried sceletium was often chewed. It has also been known to be used in teas, as a snuff, and smoked.
Kanna is an SSRI. It has been recently advertised as a potentiator for many herbs. The Alkaloids Mesembrine, Mesembrenone, Memembrenol and Tortuosamine have all been identified as being responsible for some of the psychoactive effects of Kanna.
Three grades are on offer, Fermented (coarse and fine), Unfermented (coarse and fine) and smokers'cut
The coarse Sceletium can be chewed or added to a tobacco mix to be smoked. The fine grade can be used to make tinctures, used as snuff, ingested or also added to tobacco mix.
Kanna is generally safe, but it should be utilized with care. In heavy doses it can cause stimulation and then sedation. Do not take heavy dosages when operating machinery. This product is for dietary use. Due to the seritonin uptake inhibition activities of Sceletium, there may be interactions with prescription drugs. Persons taking any psychiatric drugs (including anti-anxiety drugs, sedatives, hypnotics, anti-depressants and anti-psychotics) or any cardiac medications, are advised not to take Sceletium. If unexpected side-effects occur, discontinue use immediately! Side-effects may include mild headache, slight nausea, or insomnia.
