'First published in 1931 this book has become a classic of South African angling literature. After the introductory chapters the design of the book is in three parts:- Part I deals with the well-known surface fishes - Elf, Leerfish, Yellow-tail, Kob, Geelbek, Snoek and the Katonkels. Part II is given to the popular bottom-feeders - Red Steenbras, Red Stumpnose, White Stumpnose, Dassie, Galjoen, John Brown, Wildeperd, Roman, White Steenbras, and the two Biskops or Mussel-Crushers. Part III is styled "A Conversation" - an interesting and informative discourse, in which a doctor is the principal speaker. The chapter on the Tunny is supplemented in this new edition by a history of identification of the tunny species in South African waters, depicting early enterprises leading to present-day realities. This brings the book up-to-date, and culminates in a solemn warning - "rather lose your tackle than your life" - to enthusiasts contemplating giant tunny fishing from the open ocean ledge at Rooi Krantz.
