A French literary classic which was awarded the Prix Renaudot in France in 1957. A middle-aged man takes the train in Paris to visit his lover in Rome. He intends to tell her that he has finally decided to leave his wife, found a job for her in Paris and is ready to take her there and live with her. The novel describes his gradual change of mind, eventually spend the week-end in Rome alone, going back to Paris and leaving the situation as it was.
First published as La Modification by Les Editions de Minuit, Paris, in 1957. This English translation by Jean Stewart published by Faber and Faber, London, 1958. Condition: Good. Some foxing on first and last pages. Previous owner's name on first pastedown. Jacket flaps spotted. Rest of cover somewhat scuffed with tears at edges. Pieces of jacket torn out at top and rear of spine. Red cloth cover in very good condition with title, author's name and publisher in yellow on spin.
