Second World War Medal Group to G. V. Robson (Unusual entitlement of SIX STARS)
A highly unusual WWII group to G V Robson, a South African citizen whose Merchant Navy service entitled him to six Stars. As per British WWII Medal Issue Regulations the 6th star was represented by a bar on one of the other stars.
Charles Robson joined the Merchant Navy in his home town Durban in September 1942, shortly before his 17th birthday. His first trips were to North Africa via the Suez Canal and thence to the UK (Africa Star & bar NA42-43). He docked in Naples in October 1943 (Italy Star). By that time he had already earned the 39-45 Star and in July 1944 his ship, the “Highland Princess” docked in Fremantle, Western Australia.
The voyage must have been round the Cape of Good Hope, qualifying him for the Atlantic Star and Pacific Star. Subsequent service in the “Empire Chapman”, which was cryptically described on the Service Verification Working Sheet as “Beaches, 10/44” finally earned Robson the bar “France & Germany”.
