Secret life of Bees, The (Jennifer Hudson, Alicia Keys) (DVD)

This drama is based on the acclaimed novel by Sue Monk Kidd. And what a stellar adaptation it is. With brilliant performances from a huge ensemble cast, gorgeous and lush cinematography, and a polished script that tackles some heavy emotional issues (racism; abuse; death), this movie is one that will linger long in the mind after the credits have rolled. Dakota Fanning easily out-acts her fellow cast members as Lily, who goes on the run from her abusive father, and ends up in the care of a trio of bee-keeping sisters. As she struggles to find out about a mother she never knew, she encounters people for whom love and family is all-important. This tale has a few tear-jerking moments, but it never tries to manipulate your emotions. The excellent cast all manage to make their characters real people, and after Fanning, the next best performance comes from Queen Latifah as the maternal August Boatwright. She accepts Lily into her home, and their burgeoning friendship is one of love and respect, something Lily never received at home. If I had to choose any negatives though, I'd be hard-pressed but would eventually admit that the ending is a tad flat and too easy. But it still doesn't distract from what is a touching and heartwarming film. (4 out of 5, by Carlisle Johnson)
