THIS HIGHLY SOUGHT AFTER 1960S OLD BROWN SHERRY (FORTIFIED WINE) CERAMIC DECANTER REMINDS ONE OF THE DECANTERS USED BY THE SPANISH EARLY IN THE 18TH CENTURY. THE CERAMIC DECANTERS IS STAMPED ON BOTTOM VITREOUS CHINA G.C. WARE MADE IN R.S.A.
 
NOTE I HAVE FIVE 1961 MONIS COLLECTORS PORT BOTTLES FROM 1987 THAT COMMEMORATE THE 300 YEAR PAARL ANNIVERSARY ON AUCTION THIS WEEK. ALTHOUGH FORTIFIED WINES (A WINE TO WHICH A DISTILLED SPIRIT, USUALLY BRANDY, HAS BEEN ADDED) LIKE PORT ALMOST NEVER SPOIL WITH AGE, I CAN UNFORTUNATELY NOT GUARANTEE HOW DRINKABLE THIS WINE WILL BE. BUT MOST FORTIFIED WINES AGE VERY WELL IN THE BOTTLE AND DO NOT "GO OFF" AFTER A CERTAIN NUMBER OF YEARS. THEY JUST KEEP GETTING BETTER!
 
SEDGEWICKS SHERRY (1886-present)
James Sedgwick, a former sea captain, founded a company called the J. Sedgwick & Co. which dealt with liquor, cigar and tobacco in 1850. After his death in 1870, two of his sons, Charles and Alfred, took over and expanded the business. They founded JSD (James Sedgwick Distillery) in 1886 at Wellington, S.A. and named the distillery after their father. The distillery sat on the banks of the River Berg. Today they are known for their whiskys Three Ships and Bain Single Grain Whiskey but for a long period their Old Brown Sherry was the staple drink of South Africans. It was a fortified wine (wine to which a grape spirit like brandy is added) that was nutty dark and rich and they called Sedgwicks Old Brown Sherry.
Sedgwicks Old Brown Sherry was launched in 1916 making it South Africas first and original old brown sherry made in the Spanish Oloroso style and has gained cult status amongst many South Africans. For a long time until the 1960s they were bottled in the now classic enamelled ceramic decanters resembled old ship bottle decanters. It had a handle to carry with you wherever you went.
JSD only started as a commercial whisky distillery in 1990 with the production of Three Ships. Three Ships finished their 15-year-old whisky in pinotage casks, the first in the world. JSD now produces two brands of whiskies Three Ships Single Malt/Blended Whisky and Bain Single Grain Whisky. Both names receive various awards over the years and are some of the best whiskies in the world.

FORTIFIED WINES:
Fortification is the process of adding a grape spirit like brandy to wine during or after fermentation.The word fortify means to strengthen, reinforce, and protect. In wine terms, that means increasing the alcohol content, halting fermentation in some instances, and extending shelf life.
You might be wondering why someone would fortify wine in the first place. Well, back in the day before refrigeration and air-tight wine bottling was available, winemakers had to figure out a way to preserve their wine and prevent spoilage. As it turned out, adding distilled spirits to the wine did the trick.
There are 5 main types of fortified wine, each with their own special characteristics: Sherry, Port, Madeira, Marsala and Vermouth.
 
VITREOUS CHINA G.C. WARE MADE IN R.S.A.:
Vitreous china is an enamel coating that is applied to ceramics, particularly porcelain, after they have been fired. Enamel is a substance made from glass that is used to coat or protect clay, ceramics, metal and glass items. G.C. Ware as far as I can tell stands for Glass Ceramics Ware. Online listings indicate these ceramic decanters were made in Ladysmith but more details about the company was not forthcoming.
