Selected Poems - George Herbert GEORGE HERBERT was born in 1593, the younger brother of Lord Herbert of Cherbury, and a native of Montgomery in Wales. His early career was spent in Cambridge where he rose to the grand position of Public Orator. He also for a time represented Montgomery as an MP. In his late twenties, though, he finally took holy orders and in 1620 became rector of Bemerton, near Salisbury. For the next ten years he served as a humble country priest, noted for his simple piety and conscientiousness. His most famous poems are from this period and are valued for the intensity and directness with which they dramatise 'the many spiritual conflicts that have passed betwixt God and my soul'.
