Black Subject/s is the first monograph on Serge Alain Nitegeka, published on the occasions of his first major solo show, Black Lines at Stevenson Johannesburg, and his exhibition Structural-Response 1 at Le Manège gallery at the French Institute of Senegal, Dakar. It encompasses his work from 2010 to 2012, including images of his paintings on wood, large-scale installations, and his 100 Stools intervention at the Refugee Centre in Marabastad, Pretoria. The latter work is the subject of an essay by Bettina Malcomess, while Rita Kersting explores Michael Fried's notion of 'extreme realism' in relation to his work, and finds a wealth of influences and precursors to Nitegeka's oeuvre in western modernism.
