What started as a jam session between friends, namely Mel Botes and Mathys Roets, culminated in a CD and DVD a year later by six guys playing and singing the songs they love. The rest of 'Ses Snare' are Blackie Swart, Thean Kotze, Leon Ecroignard and Wouter van de Venter.
Since making their debut at the Centurion Theatre last July, the group 'Ses Snare' has played to sold out houses at the Klein Karoo Arts Festival, Innibos Festival in Nelspruit, Volksblad Festival in Bloemfontein, Cultivaria Festival in Paarl, as well as Aardklop Festival in Potchefstroom. They have also played in centra on the platteland such as Polokwane, Rustenburg, Tzaneen etc.
All the members have solo careers as musicians, arrangers or studio producers.
'Ses Snare' is at their best in theatres – in a controlled environment – they are not interested in playing all the free stages at festivals. The music they play is for a market that is fed-up with all the candy floss music they are fed each day – what they do comes over as honest, true, no frills and hugely enjoyable.
'Ses Snare' will perform at all the bigger festivals again next year, starting with a new program at the KKNK in April next year.
Die ses snare, dis nou Mel, Mathys, Blackie, Wouter, Leon en Thean het elkeen reeds ‘n gevestigde musiekloopbaan, is meesters op hulle kitare en loop mekaar gereeld by feeste en ander musiekgeleenthede raak. Hierdie is egter die eerste keer dat hulle almal saam op een verhoog sal wees om hulle gunsteling liedjies te speel.
Dit was juis by een van die feeste waar Mathys en Mel toevallig saam begin jam het en so is die saadjie geplant wat aanleiding gegee het tot Ses Snare, ‘n konsert waarin kitare, saam met stemme al die ou treffers ‘n baie opwindende kleur gee. Daar sal ook bietjie gekskeer en twakpraat wees, maar wanneer hierdie Ses Snare agter hul kitare inskuif besef mens hulle mag maar kitaar speel.
The 'ses snare' (six strings), Mel, Mathys, Blackie, Wouter, Leon and Thean, each with his own well-established music career, are maestros on their guitars and constantly meet one another at festivals and other music events. This time however, it will be the first time that they share the stage to play their favourite songs.
As a matter of fact, it was at one of these festivals where Mathys and Mel, by coincidence, started to jam together and the seed was sowed that lead to 'Ses Snare', a concert mingled with voices that gives the performance an exciting flavour. There will be some fun and joking around, but when these guys start playing the guitar one realises there is no reason why they should not.
