A docudrama about the border war of 1970s, in which soldiers of the South African Defence Force faced guerrillas on the northern borders of South Africa. Five conscripts report for duty at an army training camp in Kimberley, where they are introduced to the hardships of army life by a ruthless sergeant-major. The five youngsters become good friends and build up a camaraderie that at times includes the sergeant-major. When the sergeant-major covers up for the softie in the group, he is demoted for his loyalty. Thereafter the five and their demoted leader volunteer for service on the border.
During one of their missions, they penetrate enemy territory and are cut off from their support group. In their desperate efforts to get back to base camp, they endure heavy enemy fire. Two, including the sergeant, die and their bodies are left behind. Watch for a young Richard Loring in the group.
