Vibrant in colour and each decorated with a colourful folk image and great attention to detail. These are handmade and each one is unique.
They are made in homes and workshops in Srinagar and other parts of the Kashmir Valley, a region in the northern part of the Indian subcontinent. The craft itself was introduced to Kashmir from Persia in the 14th century by the Muslim saint Mir Sayyid Ali Hamadani and later popularized by King Zain-ul-Abidin in the 15th century, who brought skilled artisans from Central Asia.
Who made it: The specific maker is an anonymous Kashmiri artisan or a family of artisans, as the craft has traditionally existed as a family profession with skills passed down through generations. There are no individual signatures on such pieces to identify the exact maker.
