These intricate and imaginative tales, all set in the nineteenth century, won wide acclaim in America and soon appeared in Britain and then in Denmark (as Syv fantastike fortaellinger). "since her pseudonym was quickly penetrated, she published under her own name in every other country, except the United States, where 'Isak Denisen' swiftly became a valuable brand." Blixen was was influenced by German Romanticism, Bocacia's Decameron, The Arabian Nights and the English gothic novel.
