It centres on the author’s experiences in the collection of seed of Proteaceae, particularly of variants of South Africa’s national flower, Protea cynaroides, the giant or king protea. The book abounds in subtleties about proteas and their ecological adaptations, and contains many delightful anecdotes about that doyen of protea cultivation, Maria Vogts, who shared information about wild populations of elusive Proteaceae with the author.
