The thirty-nine steps

A case of identity
The story revolves around the case of Miss Mary Sutherland, a woman with a substantial income from the interest on a fund set up for her. She is engaged to a quiet Londoner who has recently disappeared. Sherlock Holmes' detective powers are barely challenged as this turns out to be quite an elementary case for him, much as it puzzles Watson. The fianc, Hosmer Angel, is a peculiar character, rather quiet, and rather secretive about his life. Miss Sutherland only knows that he works in an office in Leadenhall Street, but nothing more specific than that. All his letters to her are typewritten, even the signature, and he insists that she write back to him through the local Post Office.

The five orange pips
In "The Five Orange Pips," one of the short stories in "Adventures ..," John Openshaw visits Baker Street to consult Sherlock Holmes as to the mysterious deaths of both his uncle and father upon the arrival of letters containing only five dried orange pips and an envelope mark 'K.K.K.'. The young gentleman further relates that he too has received a similar envelope with instructions to surrender some papers. Holmes quickly deduces that his client faces imminent danger from a secret society in America.

The man with the twisted lip

A strange place to bump into one another!
Holmes and Dr. Watson discover each other in the black shadows of a smoke-filled opium den in the basement of the very house where Holmes is investigating his latest murder case! But of course the good doctor is only there to hunt down the drug-addicted husband of his wife's dear, but distraught, friend. Sound confusing? For all but The Great Detective, it probably is. And we haven't even talked about the murder yet!

The adventure of the Blue Carbuncle

When the Countess of Morcar's priceless blue carbuncle is stolen, a reformed thief is charged with the crime.
But a strange thing happens. Trivial is what Sherlock Holmes calls it. He's studying an old hat when Dr. Watson visits to wish him "The compliments of the season." Holmes tells Watson about Commissionaire Peterson's report of seeing a little knot of roughs assault a man carrying a Christmas goose home for the family. They all ran, leaving both the goose and the hat. No one could locate the man, Henry Baker, whose name was tagged to the goose so Peterson took possession.
Soon another strange thing - Mrs. Peterson found Morcar's fabulous blue jewel inside the goose while preparing it for their family festivities.
Can S.H. sort this all out?

The adventure of the Speckled Band

The Hound of the Baskervilles(190102) is Arthur Conan Doyles most celebrated Sherlock Holmes adventure. At the end of the yew tree path of his ancestral home, Sir Charles Baskerville is found dead. Close by are the footprints of a gigantic hound. Called to investigate, Holmes seems to face a supernatural foe. In the tense narration of the detectives efforts to solve the crime, Conan Doyle meditates on late Victorian and early twentieth-century ideas of ancestry and atavism, the possible biological determination of criminals, the stability of the British landed classes, and the place of the supernatural.

Historical documents included with this fully-annotated Broadview edition help contextualize the novels debates and reveal its cultural and literary significance as a supreme instance of early detective fiction. Also included is the Conan Doyle short storyThe Adventure of the Speckled Band.

The adventure of the Copper Beeches

job with a couple living in a remote country home, her positive first impressions of the man and his family begin to change.

Violet Hunter is a young woman with her wits about her; she was a touch suspicious even before starting the new post. Having no family, she consulted with Sherlock Holmes. The job was lucrative and, after discussing it, she decided to accept. But a few weeks later, under a mixture of fear and uncertainty, she asks Holmes to investigate the increasingly disturbing events that have been unfolding around her. Just what is happening at the home of Jephro Rucastle and his wife?
