Ships of the Union Castle Line
By Laurence Dunn
The history of a shipping company that became one of the finest in the world, operating a fleet of passenger liners and cargo ships – the former known as "Lavender Ladies" owing to their hull colours - serving the UK – South African run. Behind the success of Union-Castle there is a story of bitter rivalry between the original Union Line and the younger Castle Line headed by the remarkable Sir Donald Currie.
Their amalgamation in 1900 put an end to the long feud. The author gives a history of the lines and describes their ships from the 1850’s to the 1950’s. Their war-service in both world conflicts is recorded and there is much information on the fleet of 1954 as well as the ships that had gone before. The book is profusely illustrated with photographs, drawings, silhouettes, etc.
First edition hardcover published 1954, 128 Pages, no dust jacket, good condition as per pics, name dedication inscription in pen to front inside cover.
