This is a groundbreaking blend of natural history, archaeology and human stories. Based on the TV series, the book presents the wonder and diversity of South Africa’s coast in an odyssey that takes readers through some of the most beautiful and scenic spots on the planet – from the great gannet colony on Malgas Island to the calving grounds of the Southern right whale in Walker Bay and the nesting sites of sea turtles on the Zululand coast.
Never before has the splendour of South Africa’s coast been portrayed in such detail. Spectacular aerial photography reveals the physical features of the shoreline in a whole new way. Engaging and lively text, drawing on the insights and research of a broad range of scientists and other experts, interweaves three main themes: the amazing adaptations made by plants and animals to challenging conditions; the fascinating and varied history of human activity along the coastline; and the archaeological discoveries that are shedding light on the very dawn of modern human behaviour.
