This gorgeous piece features 7 round-cut real red spinel gemstones and 6 round-cut cubic zirconias in a 'starflower' cluster design, all claw set in 9ct yellow gold. The colour combination is striking! The spinels are a deep pinkish red that stands out well against the icy white sparkle of the cubic zirconias and the warm yellow of the gold. Red spinel has been popular with jewellers for years as it is hard to distinguish from ruby. The two were only separated into two gemstone varieties from 1783. You might be interested to know that the so called "Black Prince's Ruby" in the centre of the Imperial State Crown of England is in fact ... a red spinel!  It would have been nice if the stones were diamonds (!) but the stones are well faceted and beautifully claw-set into the gold and they give off a quality sparkle. The contrast of the colours is particularly striking. The ring has a slim 9ct yellow gold shank. Although dainty in the shank, the ring head is quite a good size - 12mm x 11mm. It features an interesting cage-like openwork structure that holds the gemstones 7mm high above the finger. The ring is in good condition and is hallmarked with the '375' hallmark indicating 9ct gold and the jeweller's signature. Pretty and eye-catching, a delight on the hand!
