En route to Le Havre in 1917 with 823 men of the South African Native Labour Corps, to serve in France during World War One, the passenger steamship "Mendi" was struck by the freighter "Darro". The resulting damage caused the "Mendi" to sink, with the loss of 616 lives.

204 page paperback published 1987 by University of Natal Press. Notes, sources, roll of honour and index. Light insect damage to top right corner of the half-title page. Signed by the author on the title page.
