To answer the question of how the lion fits into the confines of man-restricted areas, the author and his team developed ground-breaking methods to count the lion population of the Kruger National Park. Previously the numerical extent of the lion population in the park was unknown. James Clarke, in his review for The Star newspaper, writes of the book "Butch Smuts proves that research in the bush is an adventure. Here are the facts about big-game management in the Kruger Park wrapped up in a highly readable story."

Hardcover octavo first published 1982 by Macmillan South Africa (Publishers) (Pty) Ltd in a whole jacket showing light wear along edges. Original ochre cloth with gilt titling on the front and spine. Well illustrated with many photographs, 295 pages including index, the last page having a short note in pen. This copy contains a signed dedication by the author to James Clarke, dated October 1982, thanking him for his assistance producing the book.
