"The descriptions are concise, accurate and easy to follow - although with a few species (for example the Rangaeris spp) they are too meagre to be helpful, and focus only on the floral parts. But the delight of the book is the accurate line drawings of each species that accompanies the text. These are clear and invaluable, for as every field naturalist knows one sketch is worth a page of description. But again the emphasis tends to be on illustrating the inflorescence, and with some species there is no illustration of the whole plant. For a botanist this may not matter - and after all it is the inflorescence which is important for classification - but for an ordinary naturalist it is helpful - especially with respect to the epiphytes which are often difficult to find in flower."
