Born in London in 1865, the author in 1883 emigrated to Natal, where he associated himself with the Marianhill Mission Station, and opened a boarding school for local Zulu boys. In 1887 he returned to Europe and was ordained a priest at the Church of St. John of Lateran. He returned to South Africa and spent some time in the Transkei, in 1896 returning to Zululand, where he established a mission station between the Mlalazi and Mhlathuze rivers. It was over the many years at this mission station that he acquired the knowledge of the Zulu people and their history and traditions contained in this book, that he considers to be his magnum opus, among the many written works he penned.
