This is an exceptional example of turn-of-the-century German silversmithing. This "Individual" or place-setting ashtray features a high-relief Repoussé tavern scene, a classic motif in the Hanau tradition. The scene depicts a lively pub setting, framed by a delicate, scalloped rim with ornate scrollwork detailing.
The piece is hallmarked with the German national "Crescent and Crown" (Reichskrone) mark alongside the "800" fineness stamp. Unlike mass-produced cast items, this is a genuine hammered piece, evidenced by the hollow-back design which gives the scene its remarkable three-dimensional depth. It is a sophisticated, "pocket-sized" treasure for any collector of fine European silver or tobacciana.
