DESCRIPTION | A lovely ANTIQUE SILVER PLATED SOUP LADLE (c 1910). This solid and heavy ladle is silver plate on nickel alloy and was manufactured by the SILVERSMITHS WILLIAM HUTTON AND SONS FROM SHEFFIELD, ENGLAND. It is in the OLD ENGLISH FIDDLE PATTERN (identified by the pip on the reverse side of the handle and the slide stop just above the bowl). The ladle measures 35 cm in length when measured in a straight line from top to bottom. You can see the item on auction in the image above. 4 More images and more information follows. Please ask a question if there is anything you are unsure about. |
CONDITION | The silver plating of the ladle is worn off in places and there is some shallow pitting inside the bowl. The wear is not very obvious because the nickel alloy base metal is very close in colour to the silver plating. There is no engraving on the ladle and it has obviously not been re - plated in it's century of existence. The wear on the silver plating does not detract much from it's appearance and gives it a feel of antiquity. |
A lovely and heavy ladle which, through it's solidity, pattern and age displays very classy on the dinner table. |
The ladle seen from behind. Note the pip at the top of the handle which is part of the Old English Fiddle pattern. The ladle also has a nice graceful and classy curve.
The Manufacturer's Markings are on the back of the ladle near the top. See the next image for an explanation of the markings.
The markings on the ladle. From left to right: The crossed arrows (3x3 patented as part of their hallmark design by William Hutton in 1902), 3 marks for William Hutton & Sons, 2 marks for British plate, mark for metal plate A quality (denoting top quality silver plate). These markings were used by William Hutton & Sons from 1902 until the firm folded in 1930.
Shown with a matchbox in the bowl to give an idea of relative size. This is a large ladle which is 35 cm tall.
