Silver 'S.A. Orthopaedic' Medals (Dr. Cyril Kaplan - Author of 'In Three Wars')
These two early, scarce medical association medals were awarded to Dr. Cyril Kaplan (1917-2012), a well-known South African Orthopaedic Surgeon, an associate professor of orthopaedics at the Albert Einstein Medical College in New York and author of the book, 'In Three Wars', a personal and orthopaedic perspective during three different wars. I've also included a short history on him below, obtained from his Obituary.
The first medal, titled 'PAST PRESIDENT' in red enamel, with a maroon ribbon is beautifully made in sterling silver with amazing cut-out detail, featuring a large tree with fairies against a maroon background, and the words 'THE SOUTH AFRICAN ORTHOPAEDIC ASSOCIATION' around the frame, with a silver protea flower forming the hanger. The back is engraved 'CYRIL KAPLAN, 1973-75' and stamped '925, SILVER'. The second medal is slightly bigger, also a nice quality medal with lovely detail and appears to be made of bronze or brass with a red ribbon. It features a snake entwined around a pole with leaves behind it and the words 'AFRICAE. AVSTRALIS. S.M.B. SOCIETATIS.MEDICORVN' around the frame. The back is engraved 'CYRIL KAPLAN, 1967'. The silver medal measures 43mm (including hanger) x 25mm, with ribbon it measures 75mm and weighs 19g. The second medal measures 72mm (including hanger) x 43mm, with ribbon it measures 115mm and weighs 29.5g.
