DESCRIPTION | This is a lovely smallish original water colour painting depicting a RICKSHAW BOY painted by early South African Black artist SIMON MNGUNI (1885 - 1956) in 1954. The painting is framed in the original solid wooden frame and is mounted on board and protected by glass. The artist has signed the artwork at bottom right and also named it 'RIKSHO BOY'. He did not date the artwork, but the date 1954 appears on the back of the framed painting. The painting measures 500 x 400 mm in the frame and the artwork alone measures 320 x 250 mm. You can see the painting as it is sold in the image above. There are four more images and further particulars below. Please have a look at them and ask a question if there is anything you are unsure about. |
CONDITION | This artwork is in good condition with only some even browning to the paper it is painted on. It is suitably framed for the period and can be hung as is. |
This is a very nice artwork for collectors of Indiginous South African art and is a very good investment piece - it can, in fact, be described as a museum piece since works of Simon Mnguni are displayed in several prestigious art and cultural museums throughout the country. Simon Mnguni was one of the first South African artists to earn a living from painting. He is well known for depictions of Zulu figures and culture. The Zulu ethnologist Kitty Campbell commissioned him to do several works on Zulu culture for her museum at Muckleneuk, Pietermaritzburg during his lifetime. He was also the first Black artists to exhibit at a recognised art academy when his works were exhibited at the Natal Society of Artists in 1925. The works of the early Black artists are still very undervalued in this country and I believe that the work on offer here makes a good medium to long term investment piece. Potential buyers are advised to research this artist on the Internet and look at the archives on the sites of art auctioneers such as Bernardis and Sothebys. More details on the artist can also be found in Steven Sack's book 'The Neglected Tradition.' The painting on offer is a typical depiction of a Zulu in the profession of 'Riksha Boy'. Traditionally the profession of Riksha Boy was one which carried a lot of stature in the Zulu culture because a Ricksha Boy could earn more in 2 days than a herdboy earned in a month. All Ricksha Boys came from the Mandlakazi Klan from Nongoma in Northern Zululand, which was known for the strenght of their men. The one in the painting worked on the Durban beachfront in 1954. |
