In this edition contains, for the first time, the 71 surviving drawings in full colour made by Heinrich Claudius who accompanied Simon van der Stel on his journey. Also included is a facsimile reproduction of the entire manuscript of Van der Stel's journal of his expedition to Namaqualand with the transcription by G.C. de Wet and the English translation by R.H. Pheiffer.
