The SS Mendi was a steamship that sank in the English Channel on February 21, 1917, after a collision with the SS Darro, resulting in the deaths of over 600 people, mostly black South African soldiers serving in the South African Native Labour Corps during World War I. The tragedy remains one of South Africa's worst maritime disasters, and the ship and its lost soldiers are commemorated through memorials & the Order of Mendi for Bravery.
