SLIPPER ORCHID (PAPHIOPEDILUM) | LIVE SPECIMEN AUCTION
The Slipper Orchid is one of the most distinctive and highly collectible members of the orchid world. Named for its unique, pouch-like lower petal that resembles a slipper, this terrestrial orchid offers an exotic, architectural look that instantly upgrades any indoor collection.
This specimen is an established "Green-Strap" variety with a compact, "sessile" bloom habit. The flower sits neatly against the lush green foliage, creating a clean and symmetrical silhouette that is perfect for desk or shelf display. The foliage consists of strong, leathery, strap-shaped green leaves in a healthy fan formation. This is a mature specimen currently established for a 15cm nursery pot.
Market Reference
In South Africa, established Slipper Orchids are premium items. Depending on the specific variety, flowering-size specimens in 12cm-15cm pots typically retail between R200.00 and R550.00 at specialized nurseries.
Care and Environment
These orchids thrive in bright, filtered, indirect light. An east-facing window with gentle morning sun is ideal. Unlike many other orchids, Slipper Orchids do not have water-storing bulbs and must be kept consistently moist but never soggy. They prefer moderate indoor humidity and benefit from a diluted, balanced orchid fertilizer during the growing season.
Packaging and Condition
This plant is shipped bare-root for safe and efficient travel. The root system is sealed in moisture-locking plastic to ensure the plant arrives hydrated. The foliage and bloom are carefully wrapped to protect the waxy texture and delicate growth points during transit.
