Spotlight on Sly & the Family Stone Review by Richie Unterberger
One of several piecemeal compilations of pre-Epic Sly Stone floating around. Most or all of the 16 tracks here probably date from his mid-'60s demos (some performed by other singers) at Autumn Records. Much more straight R&B/soul-oriented than his late '60s work, it's mostly of interest as an insight into his formative influences, although it offers some small pleasures. Ace's In the Studio With Sly Stone is the most comprehensive (and most professionally packaged) of these compilations by far. But if you're a completist, this does offer a few tracks that aren't frequently duplicated elsewhere, like the interesting soul/pop confection "Honest" (which has an unidentified woman on lead vocals).
