Small Carlton Ware Basket.

A ceramic posy holder (or basket), specifically identified as the "Flowers and Basket" design. Made by Carlton Ware (originally Wiltshaw and Robinson) in Stoke-on-Trent, England.

Did You Know?
The primary purpose of this Carlton Ware piece is as a posy holder (also known as a tussie-mussie or bouquet holder), a decorative vessel specifically designed to hold a small, tight bunch of flowers.

Historical & Functional Uses
Vase and Display: It serves as a miniature tabletop vase, often used as a centerpiece for shelves, dressers, or windowsills. Because of its shallow design, it is ideal for short-stemmed garden flowers like primroses, pansies, or forget-me-nots.
Preserving Freshness: Historically, these holders were used to keep delicate bouquets fresh. Users would often place a piece of moist moss or a damp sponge at the base to provide water to the flower stems.
Protection: One of its main practical functions in the Victorian and early 20th century was to protect clothing. The ceramic body acted as a barrier, preventing water droplets or sap from the fresh stems from staining expensive silk or lace garments.
Serving Dish: Some variations of this "basket" style were also marketed or used as sweet dishes for serving small treats like candies or biscuits.
Gifting: These items were frequently given as tokens of affection or commemorative gifts, particularly for occasions like weddings or anniversaries.

Made in England, 1939.

Visible Flaws: Minor age-related wear. Noticeable Hairline cracks under the Glazing.
