Small Victorian VESTA Match Safe Pocket Watch
chatelaine
Key chain Fob
Although this Brass Pig Vesta Match Safe is over 100 years old , it's cool factor is timeless.
This little Victorian brass pig stands on all 4 legs. The head comes back to reveal a place to store matches. Under the stomach is the striking area. There is a place on the bridge of the nose for positioning a lit match. The head remains firmly closed when pig stands on 4 feet. The tail is missing but does not distract from this item. It has no other problems .This piece is a particularity fabulous example of a Vesta with a old, nice patina. There is a ring for hanging on a necklace or key or wallet chain. Beautiful craftsmanship all the way around. Closes with a snap. Outstanding!Although this Brass Pig Vesta Match Safe is over 100 years old , it's cool factor is timeless.
Matches were a very expensive and valuable commodity in Victorian times and only the privileged could afford to use them. As a result, match safes or Vestas became necessary in which to store them in order to keep them dry.
