Boek en omstag nog heel mooi maar nie perfek nie - Prentjie gegoogle - Vorige eienaar se naam binne.   >>>   James Leonard Brierley Smith, (26 Oktober 1897 – 7 Januarie 1968), meer bekend J.L.B. Smith, was 'n Suid-Afrikaanse igtioloog, organiese skeikundige en professor. Hy het bekend geword toe hy die selakantgeïdentifiseer het. Daar is vroeër geglo dat die Selakant reeds uitgesterf het. Hy het verskeie publikasies die lig laat sien.    -    Smith verwerf 'n meesters in chemie aan die Universiteit Stellenbosch en 'n doktoraal in filosofie aan die Universiteit van Cambridge. Met sy terugkeer na Suid-Afrika doseer hy aan die Rhodes-universiteit inGrahamstad in die Oos-Kaap.   -   Sy belangstelling in igtiologie ontstaan tydens ‘n strandvakansie, waar hy as gevolg van swak gesondheid ontspan het.   -    In 1938 hoor Smith dat Marjorie Courtenay-Latimer ‘n selakant gevind het. Hy ondersoek die vis in Februarie 1939, waarna hy dit identifiseer. Die vis is na die ontdekker daarvan vernoem, Latimeria.  -   Smith het saam met sy vrou aan die boek Sea Fishes of South Africa(1949) gewerk, waarna verskeie ander titels tot in 1968 verskyn het.   -   In 1968 pleeg Smith na 'n lang tydperk van siekte selfmoord deur sianied te neem. Sy vrou het later die JLB Smith Instituut vir Igtiologie in Grahamstad gestig.
