This lively and colourful book is a good introduction to the snakes in southern Africa. It isolates all of the region's most common harmless snakes, all the 'dangerous' snakes and all those (non-dangerous) snakes that are likely to be confused with the dangerous species – a total of 48 species that people fear most or are most likely to encounter. The emphasis is on identification, and on first aid treatment in the event of a snake bite. For each species there's a distribution map and a simple description highlighting their distinguishing characters and typical behaviour. There are also photographs of them at different stages of development, of different colour forms – and of those species with which they are likely to be confused. A section on snake bite (where necessary) deals with symptoms and treatment.
