Soapwort is a great plant to have around and it doesn't take up a lot of space and can easily be pruned or planted in a container. The great ingredient saponin gives it its soap-like properties used for cleaning and medicinal properties. From mid-summer to early Autumn it produces clusters of 5 petal pink or white flowers.
Place seeds in damp paper towel in plastic bag in the fridge for 4 weeks to break dormancy. Sow in spring in well-draining soil and keep moist. Seedlings can be transplanted when 15cm or sown directly.
Growing your own soap has never been a bad idea.
