Sodium Tripolyphosphate (STPP)
Sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP) is a phosphate polymer most commonly used in detergents and fertilizers. White fine powder.
Uses
Food: Used as a preservative, emulsifier, and moisture retention agent in meat, seafood, and poultry
Detergents: Used as a builder in laundry detergents, dishwashing products, and other cleaning products
Fertilizers: Used in fertilizers
Water treatment: Used in water treatment products
Ceramics: Used in the production of ceramics
Paint and varnish: Used in the production of paint and varnish
Production
STPP is produced by reacting phosphoric acid with soda ash, then spray drying or crystallizing the resulting orthophosphate. The powder is then ignited to allow polymerization.
Regulation
In some countries, the use of STPP is limited or banned due to concerns about its role in the eutrophication of surface water.
Storage
STPP should be stored in a dry, tight-closed container, ideally in its original packaging, in low to moderate temperatures and humidity.
