COMPOSITION: Each daily dose (2 capsules) contains the following as active ingredient:
Red Yeast Rice standardised extract 300mg
Inactive ingredients:
Hypromellose (cellulose) vegetarian capsule shell (gelatine free), microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate (vegetarian - flow agent), magnesium silicate, silicon dioxide and colloidal silicon dioxide. Contains no colourants, preservatives, lactose, gluten, yeast, starch or artificial fillers. Contains plant extracts and natural fillers, with no colourants added - therefore the colour of the capsule contents may vary slightly from batch to batch.
PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTION:
Red yeast rice (RYR) is the product of yeast grown on rice. Manoclin K, a constituent of RYR , has a similar chemical structure to certain statin cholesterol medicines such as lovastatin. Manoclin K constitutes about 0.4% of red rice, competitively inhibits 3-hydroxy-3-methyl-glutaryl-coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase, blocking cholesterol biosynthesis. RYR also contains sterols, including beta-sitosterol, campesterol, stigmasterol, and sapogenin; isoflavones and isoflavone glycosides; and monounsaturated fatty acids. The overall cholesterol-lowering effect of RYR is probably due to the combination of manoclin K, mevinic acids, and other constituents. In clinical trials, RYR lowered serum total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triacylglycerol, apoprotein B, lipoprotein(a) and/or total cholesterol/HDL ratio.
RYR may also have the following benefits: Cardiac benefits include improved blood flow due to increase dilation of vessels and reduces levels of C-reactive protein.
INDICATIONS:
Cholest-Away contains Red Yeast Rice which lowers cholesterol by blocking the cholesterol-synthesising enzyme in the liver, known as HMG-Coenzyme A. Cholest-Away also lowers LDL ("bad") cholesterol, increases HDL ("good") cholesterol, and lowers levels of unhealthy fats called triglycerides. Added benefits include improved cardiac blood flow and reduced levels of C-reactive proteins which are responsible for heart disease.
WARNINGS:
Do not exceed recommended dosages unless on the advice of a health care provider. Do not use this product if you are allergic to any of the ingredients. If you are on any medication or suffering from any medical condition, it is advisable to seek medical advice before starting any new medicine, supplement or remedy. Safety in children has not been established.
INTERACTIONS:
Coenzyme Q10: Theoretically, red yeast may lower coenzyme Q10 levels as Manoclin K has a similar structure to statin drugs.
Grapefruit: May inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 metabolism of red yeast rice, leading to higher levels of red yeast rice.
St John's wort: Induces cytochrome P450 3A enzyme and can lower levels of red yeast rice.
Gemfibrozil: Concurrent use of red yeast rice and gemfibrozil may lead to increased risk of myopathy.
Alcohol and hepatotoxic medicines: Excessive use with red yeast rice could increase the risk of liver damage.
HMG- CoA Reductase inhibitor (?Statins?):
Manoclin K used concurrently with statin medicines may increase the chance of side effects.
Niacin: Taking high doses of the niacin with red yeast rice may theoretically increase the risk of myopathy.
Thyroid medications: Red yeast rice may reduce the efficacy of levothyroxine.
PREGNANCY AND BREASTFEEDING:
Unsafe for use in pregnancy and breastfeeding.
DOSAGE AND DIRECTIONS FOR USE:
Adults (18 years and older): Take 1 capsule twice daily with meals. This dose can be doubled to 2 capsules twice daily on the advice of your health care provider. It is strongly recommended to use Cholest-Away together with co-enzyme Q10 per day.
SIDE EFFECTS AND SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS:
Side effects: The following side effects have been reported: abdominal discomfort, heartburn, flatulence, and dizziness. Rare side effects include rhabdomyolysis, myopathy and hepatotoxicity and anaphylaxis.
KNOWN SYMPTOMS OF OVERDOSAGE AND PARTICULARS OF ITS TREATMENT:
Treatment should be symptomatic and supportive. In the case of accidental overdose of the product, contact the nearest hospital or poison control centre.
