COMPOSITION:
Each tablet contains the following as active ingredients: Melatonin 3mg Inactive ingredients: Microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, silicon dioxide.
PHARMACOLOGICAL CLASSIFICATION: A.32.16 Others
PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTION:
Melatonin is a hormone produced endogenously mainly by the pineal gland. Melatonin's primary role seems to be regulation of the body's circadian rhythm, endocrine secretions and sleep patterns.
INDICATIONS:
Melatonin helps increase the total sleep time in those suffering from sleep restriction or an altered sleep schedule e.g. shift-work and jet lag. Melatonin helps relieve daytime fatigue associated with jet-lag and helps re-set the body's sleep-wake cycle (an aspect of the circadian rhythm).
CONTRAINDICATIONS: There are no known contraindications.
WARNINGS:
Do not exceed recommended dosages unless on the advice of a health care provider. Do not use this product if you are allergic to any of the ingredients. If you are on any medication or suffering from any medical condition, it is advisable to seek medical advice before starting any new medicine, supplement or remedy. Not to be used in children unless under the supervision of a medical practitioner.
INTERACTIONS:
Warfarin and other anticoagulants: There have been isolated reports of minor bleeds and decreased prothrombin time in individuals taking melatonin and warfarin. Some medicines with anticoagulant or antiplatelet effects include aspirin, clopidogrel, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as diclofenac, ibuprofen, naproxen; dalteparin, enoxaparin, heparin, and others. Antidiabetic medicines: Melatonin might impair glucose utilisation and increase insulin resistance. Although the clinical significance is not known, melatonin may theoretically decrease the effectiveness of antidiabetic medicines which include insulin, glyburide, glipizide, chlorpropamide, and tolbutamide. Caffeine: Caffeine consumption can decrease endogenous melatonin levels. Theoretically caffeine use may decrease the effectiveness of oral melatonin. Immunosuppressants: Melatonin can boost the immune function and might interfere with immunosuppressive therapy. Melatonin is metabolized by liver enzyme P450 1A2. Medicines that alter the activity of this enzyme may increase or decrease the effects of melatonin supplements. Medicines that increase melatonin include fluvoxamine, amiodarone, anastrozole, cimetidine, ciprofloxacin, citalopram, clarithromycin, diethyl-dithiocarbamate, diltiazem, enoxacin, erythromycin, ethinyl estradiol, fluoroquinolones, fluoxetine (high dose), furafylline, interferon, isoniazid, ketoconazole, levofloxacin, methoxsalen, mexiletine, mibefradil, norfloxacin, paroxetine (high dose), ritonavir, sertraline (mild), tacrine, tricyclic antidepressants (tertiary), ticlodipine, and zileuton. Medicines that reduce melatonin levels include: carbamazepine, insulin, 3-methyl cholanthrene, modafinil, nafcillin, nicotine, omeprazole, phenobarbital, phenytoin, primidone, rifampin, ritonavir. Nifedipine: Melatonin can decrease the effectiveness of nifedipine leading to increased blood pressure and heart rate. CNS depressant medicines: Theoretically the concomitant use of melatonin with alcohol, benzodiazepines, or other sedative medicines might cause an additive sedation.
PREGNANCY AND BREASTFEEDING:
Not safe for use during pregnancy. Safety while breastfeeding has not been established.
DOSAGE AND DIRECTIONS FOR USE:
Adults: Take 1/2 to 1 tablet at bedtime or as recommended by your health care provider.
