PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTION:
Taurine is a conditionally essential amino acid that is found in large amounts in the human brain, retina, heart and platelets. Taurine is involved in retinal photoreceptor activity, bile acid conjugation, white blood cell antioxidant activity, central nervous neuromodulation, platelet aggregation, cardiac contractibility, sperm motility, growth, insulin activity and osmoregulation. Taurine is thought to be beneficial in the treatment of congestive cardiac failure. The precise mechanism of action is not yet fully understood. Taurine alters the intracellular calcium movement, increasing left ventricular function without any adverse changes in arterial pressure in patients with congestive heart failure (CHF). Taurine might also improve in heart failure because it seems to reduce blood pressure and might normalise excessive sympathetic nervous system activity that often occurs in people with hypertension and CHF. Preliminary evidence seems to indicate that taurine has natriuretic and diuretic activity. Taurine may also have cholesterol lowering effects and seems to stimulate bile acid synthesis. A taurine-supplemented diet may enhance the secretion of taurocholic acid, glycocholic acid, taurochenodeoxycholic acid, glycochenodeoxycholic acid, and total bile acid in patients with biliary atresia. Studies have indicated that taurine protects the liver from alcohol damage probably by reducing the oxidative stress on the liver. Taurine seems to have antioxidants effects and was shown to decrease lipoperoxidation in patients following a coronary artery bypass. The antioxidant effect may also explain its importance in the prevention of cataracts and macular degeneration, with studies showing a drop in the levels of intra ocular melondialdehyde, an indicator of lipid peroxidation. Research indicates that taurine activates glycine and GABA receptors in the brain leading to an anti-anxiety effect.
INDICATIONS:
Taurine is an amino acid that improves heart function and enhances eye and brain health. It has mild anti-anxiety and sleep enhancing properties, yet is non-sedating. Some research shows that taurine may also enhance brain function and mental performance. Taurine helps detoxify the liver and it improves liver function. Therefore, taurine is useful for ridding the body from the metabolites and effects of alcohol.
CONTRA-INDICATIONS:
There are no known contra-indications.
WARNINGS:
Do not exceed recommended dosages unless on the advice of a health care provider. Do not use this product if you are allergic to any of the ingredients. If you are on any medication or suffering from any medical condition, it is advisable to seek medical advice before starting any new medicine, supplement or remedy.
INTERACTIONS:
Lithuim: Taurine is thought to have diuretic properties and might reduce excretion and increase the levels of lithium.
Warfarin and anticoagulants: Based on clinical studies, taurine may reduce platelet aggregation, use with caution in individuals taking anticoagulant medicines.
Hypoglycemic medication: Taurine may potentiate the blood glucose effects of hypoglycaemic medications leading to low blood glucose levels.
