SOLAR MOLER (SM) FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What exactly is a Solar Moler?
A Solar Moler is an environmentally friendly solar powered rodent deterrent mechanism that can be used in residential gardens to control excess mole activity.
How is the Solar Moler (SM) powered?
The SM is powered by both solar and battery power, the SM automatically switches between solar power during the day and battery power throughout the night.
How does the SM actually work?
The SM consists of 2 parts, the head and the shaft. At the bottom of the 40cm shaft there is a vibration unit that vibrates every 20 seconds for approximately 1 seconds. These vibrations send sound waves across the soil.
What area does the SM cover?
The SM can cover an open, flat area of 800m2. The vibrating wave will not go through any foundations of any kind. So, if you have a front lawn and back lawn, we recommend that you install 2 SM’s for maximum results.
Why do the moles disperse?
All subterranean rodents are both light and noise sensitive creatures. The SM produces a noise wave that irritates the moles and they naturally migrate to quieter areas. The consistency of the noise is what makes the SM so successful. The SM works 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Does the SM also work with gophers, cape mole rat and other like rodents?
Yes. All rodents are sensitive to sound; they will all react by naturally migrating to quieter areas.
How difficult is it to install a SM?
Not difficult at all, you will need to dig a deep narrow hole in the soil into which the SM shaft will be inserted. The hole must be approximately 30 cm deep and once the SM shaft is inserted, the soil surrounding the hole must be tightly compacted to maximize the noise wave carry.
Because the unit is powered by solar energy, the SM must be installed in full sunlight.
Does the SM have any maintenance requirements or costs?
Not really, once you have installed the SM in the correct position in the garden, you will only need to replace the 2 x AA Rechargeable batteries every 12 months. During that period the SM will operate maintenance free.
Should I remove the SM from the garden when it rains?
No. The SM is water proof and is manufactured from aluminum and hardened plastics to withstand all weather. It is however advisable to not install the SM in the direct spray path of your garden irrigation system.
Will my pets get affected by the vibrating noise of the SM?
No. The SM is designed to produce an environmentally friendly sound wave that carries in soil, no dogs, cats, birds or earthworms will be affected by the SM.
After installing my SM, I noticed that the mole activity increased?
Yes, this may occur because the vibrating waves start to irritate the moles and they will start to tunnel within your garden, looking for quieter areas. Once they understand and accept that the vibrating waves are here to stay, they will migrate to further away areas.
How quick can I expect to see results?
Although this varies greatly from garden to garden, you should see a significant reduction in mole activity within 2 to 4 weeks of installation. Keep in mind that moles are very territorial and extremely stubborn creatures, but ultimately, they will naturally migrate to your neighbor's garden.
