SOLID SILVER MEDAL: Books of Rhodesia Limited Edition Medal : 46.7 grams
I found the following on the internet regarding this silver medal...
A MINIATURISED RECONSTUCTION OF THE BAVENDA DIVINING BOWL
This is a miniature version of the original Bavenda Divining [Zodiac] Bowl it was produced around 1981/1982 by The Books of Rhodesia Publishing Company in pure silver approx weight 46.7g in a limited edition of 1000.
This miniature Bavenda Divining Bowl is 45 mm diameter and stamped on the back 'BOOKS OF RHODESIA LIMITED EDITION' This is number 696
The original 'crocodile platter was found in a cave near the Great Zimbabwe Ruins in the 1880's. It later came into the possession of Cecil John Rhodes and was stored at Groote Schuur, Cape Town, South Africa. Known as the Bavenda Divining [Zodiac] Bowl, it is thought to have a direct cultural link with the people of Great Zimbabwe.
When found, the wooden bowl was resting on its edge in sand, and termites had eaten away part of the rim on the right. The bull and divinatory dice carved on the rim appear on soapstone carvings found at the Zimbabwe Ruins.
Bowls with similar symbols are still in use among the Venda . Seeds are floated in the bowl and 'messages' read from the symbols where the seeds touch the rim.
