Victorian Solid Silver '1900' Sovereign Case/Locket
This attractive, antique, English hallmarked sterling silver 'double sovereign' case is sadly missing the inner workings to hold the coins in place, but would make an ideal locket or secret holder for tablets, sweeteners, photo's etc. The case is beautifully decorated with an engraved 'acanthus leaf' pattern on both sides, with a central blank cartouche on the lid. It has an oval shape and would originally have been fitted with workings to hold the half and full gold sovereigns (hence the name), side by side. The case has a sprung lid with a push button opening mechanism and is fitted with a suspension ring so could be worn as a pendant on a chain. It was made in Birmingham in 1900 by silversmiths 'Samuel M. Levi' (S.M.L.) and other than the inner workings missing, it's in great condition with a strong hinge and springs open and snaps shut when closed. It measures 5,5cm x 3cm and weighs 21,2g.
