First Edition, Penguin, 1996, Large-format paperback - South African Cartoons - 175pp. Madam and Eve is a daily newspaper strip (comicstrip) originating in South Africa. A satirical strip that began in 1992 and was based on the theme of a white, middle-class woman, Gwen Anderson, and her black maid, Eve Sisulu, coming to terms with the new South Africa as the era of apartheid was coming to an end. Their relationship is made up of affectionate quarrels. Madame's mother, living in England, also became a full member of the gang. Over the years, the strip raised other social and political issues with humour. Even the concept of the comics themselves has been satirised on occasion. The gang often makes fun of political figures, both in South Africa and elsewhere in the world.
