Born in Eastwood, Nottinghamshire, England, the son of a coal miner and a schoolteacher, D.H. Lawrence rose from working-class roots to become one of the most controversial and visionary writers of the 20th century. Plagued by ill health, he lived nomadically in Europe, Australia, Mexico, and New Mexico, constantly searching for a more authentic, instinctive way of life.
Lawrence revolutionised the modern novel with his raw emotional intensity, sensual prose, and fearless exploration of sexuality, class, industrialisation, and the relationship between men and women. He believed modern civilisation had cut people off from their vital instincts and sought to reconnect body, mind, and spirit. His writing is often lyrical, prophetic, and deeply psychological.
