Design and Ergonomics
At just 20.2 mm thick, this camera will fit into your jeans for nights out in the town taking party pics and its sculpted aluminium design will make a fashion statement of its own. The sliding lens cover looks impressive as a design element but also protects your lens when not in use against scratches. Round the back a 2.7 inch touchscreen LCD makes viewing and reviewing your pictures easy as well as the added convenience of performing menu functions without finding and pushing buttons.
Picture Quality and Lens
With 8.1 megapixels you can get an 8x10 inch print at full resolution with greater enlargement possible to achieve high quality poster size prints. The 3 times Carl Zeiss optical zoom is a 35mm film equivalent to 38-114mm, which will give you a perspective from a touch over standard wide angle to short telephoto for small group pictures and good portraits. It also has a 6 times digital zoom and up to 15 times smart zoom which allows higher zoom without image quality loss, but at a lower image resolution. At 15 times, the smart zoom resolution is at VGA (640x480 pixel resolution). The Bionz processor produces smooth colour tones with a good 14 bit colour conversion (12 bit is standard on entry level SLR cameras) and it enables faster processing for bursts up to 100 shots between half second intervals. This camera is also capable of a high 3200 ISO for better lowlight photography.
Key Features
This camera eliminates the need for memory sticks with a huge 4GB internal memory which means that the camera can not only accommodate thousands of pictures at full resolution, but can also act as a take it everywhere photo album/storage solution. The camera is still able to capture images to Memory Stick Duo cards.
Face Detection auto focus and auto exposure is also a great feature for avoiding those blown out or under-exposed party pics. When this setting is selected, the camera detects faces in the scene and exposes and focuses for them. This camera also has a smile mode that detects when your subjects are smiling and will automatically take the picture only when they do. Sharp and well exposed pictures is achieved through the double anti-blur technology, which is a combination of high 3200 ISO (light sensitivity) and optical image stabilisation. To achieve sharp pictures the camera can boost the ISO (light sensitivity) setting so that it can shoot at a higher shutter speed, or it can initiate the mechanical image stabilisation system which physically moves the inside of the camera to respond to camera shake allowing sharp pictures even under slow shutter speeds. In combination, these features allow the sharp capture of images at full resolution that other cameras without this technology simply cannot. In exposure the result is that your camera allows more of the natural light in the scene to expose through so less flash is needed – avoiding the pictures of faces against black backgrounds normally seen in cameras without this technology.
The MPEG movie mode allows you to capture movies with sound at a good quality 30 frames per second at VGA quality (640x480) resolution. Good for posting to the web or even viewing on a TV. This camera can also connect to HD TVs with the optional cable.
Close up, the macro function allows you to take pictures of objects from as close as 1 cm away for true close-up photography. There are also 10 exposure modes to chose from to suit most situations including fireworks, twilight portrait and smile shutter.
